An important location factor for the interaction between the many smaller and medium-sized companies in the areas of coating. surface and galvanising technology in the region is the "Institut für Galvano- und Oberflächentechnik Solingen GmbH (IGOS)" ("Solingen Institute of Galvanising and Surface Technology"), which was founded in 1993.

The Institute assists companies as a neutral partner in the development of new processes. The improvement of surface-finishing processes means that the working life of products can be extended considerably, for example by means of corrosion protection. The optimisation of surfaces also has important implications for processing techniques and production methods. Special surface treatments by coating, hardening or improvement of physical properties produces substantial production benefits, and therefore greater economy and efficiency, in the use of tools, machine components, moulds etc.

The IGOS develops and co-ordinates qualification measures within the sector, and acts as an interface between scientific research (universities) and operating practice, enabling access to the latest innovations for small and medium-sized companies.

The IGOS was also recognised in 2002 by "Regionale 2006" for "unusual initiatives" as an innovative company as part of the campaign "Living Company Culture in the "Bergisch Triangle".
